Considering Adoption?

Contrary to some beliefs, adoption is not about “giving up your baby.” With adoption, you’ll continue your pregnancy, give birth, and place your child in an adoptive family. The goal is to provide your child with love and support while meeting your needs.

No one should force you into choosing adoption. As the birth mother, your rights and preferences are the priority. You can select the adoptive family and choose from the plans outlined below. It costs birth parents nothing to place their child for adoption.

Open Adoption

Open adoption is the most common plan because it allows you to form a relationship with your child. You and the adoptive family decide the best communication method: visits, letters, phone calls, and more.

Semi-Open Adoption

Semi-open adoption allows for contact with your child, but all communication occurs through a third party, like an adoption attorney or agency. This plan is also known as a mediated adoption.

Closed Adoption

A closed adoption is the least common plan, but it is still an option. If you desire complete confidentiality, this plan might be right for you. The courts seal all identifying records; you do not have contact with the adoptive family.

Making Your Adoption Decision

Remember, adoption is entirely your choice. The adoption coordinator you choose should fully inform you of the process before deciding.

If you choose this option, the adoptive parents pay for all your medical and legal expenses. Additional help, like material assistance, may also be available. You’ll be supported every step of the way, including during postpartum and beyond.

We’ll discuss adoption during your pregnancy options consultation, and if you’re interested, we can refer you to several adoption agencies. You’ll have the information to decide if this is the best option.
