How Do Pregnancy Tests Work?

All pregnancy tests detect hCG or human chorionic gonadotropin. This pregnancy hormone rises rapidly during those initial weeks, confirming a potential pregnancy. You can expect an accurate result with urine or blood-based pregnancy tests, though home pregnancy kits always involve a urine sample.

When Should I Take a Pregnancy Test?

Some women suspect they’re pregnant when they experience symptoms like a missed period or nausea. But what if you haven’t had symptoms or your period is typically irregular?

Remember, pregnancy symptoms vary for every woman. You may have some or none at all. You also can’t rely on common pregnancy symptoms to confirm a potential pregnancy, especially when a missed period, fatigue, stress, and other symptoms can indicate another health condition.

Taking a pregnancy test is your best first step. However, if you do have pregnancy symptoms, here are some you may experience:

  • Missed period
  • Fatigue
  • Frequent urination
  • Nausea (with or without vomiting)
  • Tender, swollen breasts
  • Bloating
  • Constipation
  • Cramping
  • Nasal congestion
  • Food aversions
  • Moodiness

It’s best to test for pregnancy several days after a missed period or a few weeks after sexual intercourse. Taking the test first thing in the morning ensures your urine is at its most concentrated, and you’ll want to read the instructions carefully.

If you receive a negative result, it is possible you’re pregnant but tested too early. Wait a few days for the hCG in your body to build and test again.

What If My Pregnancy Test Comes Back Positive?

Numerous emotions can surface when you see a positive result, including shock, fear, or even confusion. This is a big moment, but you need more answers before moving forward and determining your next steps.

Amador Pregnancy & Family Resource Center provides self-administered pregnancy tests. We can notify Medi-Cal or WIC if we observe a positive result.

You may also be eligible for an ultrasound referral to confirm critical pregnancy details, as a positive result doesn’t provide enough information to make an informed decision.
