The high school and college years can be exciting and stressful, with classes, coursework, and preparing for your future. However, when you’re unexpectedly pregnant, the stress you feel may increase.

There are several things to think about when you’re pregnant and in school. We can navigate these unique issues together.

You Have Rights

Even students have rights when pregnant and parenting. Title IX, a federal civil rights law, protects students from discrimination in school and ensures they can continue their education.

You are also entitled to specific accommodations, including excused absences and homebound instruction.

If you’re a minor, you’re probably used to your parents making decisions. But with an unexpected pregnancy, how you move forward is your choice. No one can pressure you into selecting a specific option, including abortion.

Sharing the News with Your Family and Friends

Telling your family and friends about an unexpected pregnancy can be stressful, especially if you’re worried about their opinions. Your loved ones may wonder how you’ll manage a pregnancy (and potentially raise a child) while in school. They may also feel scared, disappointed, or confused.

Sharing the news with your partner can also feel nerve-wracking, especially if they are in school as well. Remember, your loved ones’ emotions reflect their hopes and fears for this situation.

Setting clear boundaries about how they can and cannot support you is crucial; this is your pregnancy decision. Giving them time to process the news can help you talk about how they can help you move forward.
